Season 4 Episode 10
Panzanella à la Française: A Fresh Lesson in Flavour
If you’re joining us in Oui! Chef, you already know we’re all about learning French through food—because nothing motivates good language practice quite like something delicious waiting at the end. Today’s recipe is a perfect example: Panzanella, the classic Italian bread salad, reimagined with a French twist using a multigrain French baguette and a bright, simple vinaigrette you’ll want to put on everything.

This dish is a dream for beginners. No fancy knife skills required, no tricky techniques—just honest ingredients, bold flavour, and a few easy steps. It’s also an ideal canvas for learning a handful of everyday French cooking words: basilic (basil), oignon rouge (red onion), concombre (cucumber), pain (bread)… and of course, the queen of French condiments: Dijon mustard.

The magic of panzanella is in the texture. You want bread that’s crisp on the outside but still willing to soak up that punchy dressing. The vegetables bring freshness and crunch, while basil and capers add that unmistakable Mediterranean attitude. Give everything a good toss, let the flavours settle in, and you’ve got a salad that’s rustic, colourful, and absolutely bursting with personality.
Whether you’re practicing your French, building kitchen confidence, or just hungry, this recipe hits the spot. Serve it as a light lunch, a side dish, or—honestly—as a main course. It’s that satisfying.
